B+LNZ encourages farmers to become GFF trainers

Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) is calling on sheep and beef farmers to consider becoming farm trainers for the Growing Future Farmers (GFF) programme.

GFF has received over 150 applications from young people who are eager to pursue a career in agriculture. This overwhelming interest highlights a growing enthusiasm for the sector but also an urgent need for more training placements, particularly in Canterbury, King Country, and Otago.

“These aren't just numbers on a spreadsheet; they represent young people who are choosing agriculture as their career path at a time when some are questioning the industry's future,” says Wendy Paul, CEO of GFF.

“With strong demand from motivated students aged 16–21, many of whom are making farming their first choice, the call for more trainers is urgent,” she says.

GFF is a B+LNZ Award-winning initiative that connects motivated students with experienced farmers for two years of hands-on learning, mentoring, and structured support. Students spend four days a week on-farm and one day in formal learning, gaining practical livestock and agribusiness skills while contributing to daily operations.
